About Michael Jernegan
I was born and raised on Cape Cod, and from an early age was involved in everything artistic. Along with a great love of drawing and painting, I also explored other creative mediums such as batik, weaving, and film making. For several years I wrote and directed short story films with my talented siblings and neighborhood friends; for these productions I also wore the hats of location manager, set decorator, costume designer, and editor. These films gained local popularity, and won prizes in Super 8mm Film Contests in MA and NYC. In high school I won First Prize for my Animated Short Film, was voted "Most Artistic" by my graduating class, and then went on to study Art Education in college. For my student teaching I spent several months at the Copenhagen International School in Denmark where I taught art (that included extra curricular activities of batik, weaving, and film making) to children of 32 nationalities. While in Denmark, my own artistic style of bright color and design was greatly inspired by a variety of Scandinavian artists.
After returning to the US, I continued to follow many different creative paths. For several years I worked as the Display Manager for a chain of East Coast Pappagallo stores and won First Prize for a Christmas window contest on Boston's famous Newbury Street.
Then I worked for several years in the art departments of independent film productions, including the cult classic "Blue Velvet" where I was the Assistant Set Decorator, as well as Prop Designer & Maker. Each year when I watch the film it is still an exciting thrill to see my artwork on the screen. I went on to work in other film productions with several Oscar winning designers and decorators, and these talented artists had a profound effect on my artistic growth.
After three different eye surgeries I remain mostly blind in my right eye. A few years ago as part of a healing process I picked up my paint brushes again and rediscovered my love of creating with acrylic paint on canvas. My left eye is a work horse, and as long as it continues to work well, I will continue to paint. This new collection of paintings has been a tsunami of inspiration and I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to create.
I currently paint and live in Seattle with my husband; my magical beloved artist partner of 36 years.
